Situated in the country\u2019s interior, on the access road to Sortelha, this stunning building stands out against the landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having heard about it, and whilst visiting this part of the country, we had to stop off to visit the famous Radium Spa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:58px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<!-- Verticais laterais -->\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-4062967657049718\" data-ad-slot=\"8857927712\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>The History of the Radium Spa<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the name suggests, the Radium Spa was dedicated to spa treatments using radioactive waters. Such establishments were very common and popular throughout Europe in the first half of the 20th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Portugal, the Serra da Pena Hotel stood out. It was founded following a visit by a Spaniard who, influenced by the locals who believed in the healing properties of these waters, tried using them to cure his daughter\u2019s skin condition. As his attempt proved successful, he decided to build a spa hotel here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The region\u2019s water springs have been found to contain some of the most radioactive water in the world. As a result, the spa hotel has become a popular destination for the treatment of various illnesses and ailments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the 1940s, information about radiation and its harmful effects began to be publicised. This led to a sharp decline in business, resulting in the hotel\u2019s permanent closure in 1945. In the years that followed, it changed hands several times. It is currently owned by a Portuguese man who, for several years now, has had plans to turn it into a luxury hotel with a golf course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During its years of operation, the hotel had 90 rooms and could accommodate up to 150 people. Various treatments were carried out here, and guests were advised to drink the water, which was also bottled and sold under the slogan \u2018Radium Waters \u2013 brings health, vigour and strength\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can watch a very interesting video featuring some old footage of the Radium Spa <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=451179436290355\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">here<\/a>. From the A23 highway, it\u2019s just another 15 minutes or so. Alternatively, if you\u2019re coming from the beautiful village of Sortelha, it\u2019s less than a 10-minute drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whichever road you take, you\u2019ll easily spot the building in the distance. On the access road, you\u2019ll come across a dirt track leading to the Hotel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can choose to park at the entrance to this path, where there is space for one or two cars, or drive on for about 110 metres and park in a lay-by that appears just before the path starts to climb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We do not recommend driving any further along this stretch, as the track is uneven, stony and steep. We saw a Jeep driving along this track, and even vehicles of this type need to take some care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you\u2019ve parked your car, it\u2019s about 600 metres on foot to the main Spa building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spa is marked on Google Maps (as Termas \u00c1guas Radium \/ Hotel Serra da Pena), so you can enter this destination into your GPS and follow the directions provided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:53px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js\"><\/script>\n<!-- Verticais laterais -->\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\" style=\"display:block\" data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-4062967657049718\" data-ad-slot=\"8857927712\" data-ad-format=\"auto\" data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\n<script>\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\n<\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:78px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><strong>Visit the Ruins of the Radium Spa<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you\u2019ve parked, you begin the climb along the path that leads to the imposing Radium Spa building, which soon comes into view in the distance amongst the trees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite decades of neglect, and the fact that part of the building has already collapsed, it is still possible to appreciate just how large this hotel once was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:47px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full has-custom-border\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"801\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rotadoamanha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/TermasRadium_5.jpg\" alt=\"Indica\u00e7\u00e3o da recep\u00e7\u00e3o\" class=\"wp-image-8677\" style=\"border-width:3px;border-radius:20px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rotadoamanha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/TermasRadium_5.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.rotadoamanha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/TermasRadium_5-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rotadoamanha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/TermasRadium_5-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.rotadoamanha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/TermasRadium_5-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rotadoamanha.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/TermasRadium_5-18x12.jpg 18w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:63px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first sign is a large stone bearing words and arrows, indicating that visitors should head for reception, the building on the left. This stone building consists of a single room; it is simple, yet equally beautiful, with a fa\u00e7ade that matches the rest of the hotel and a wooden floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to reports we have seen, there is said to be an old steam engine in this area, but we did not find it, so it may have been removed or be hidden by vegetation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From here, we head towards the larger building. The first building comes into view on our right, followed immediately by an imposing staircase. As we climb the stairs, we come to an area that has collapsed, but which offers a fine view of the main building, higher up. At the foot of the stairs there is also a door leading into a smaller space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:41px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Although they have been abandoned for several decades, the Radium Spa still retains the grandeur that once made this building a luxury spa hotel<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:48px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We carry on our way and, once again, another completely empty building comes into view. Most of the buildings consist of large rooms with wooden floors and a large number of imposing windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We followed the dirt track that led us to the main building. The main tower of the building, which appeared to have three floors, is partially destroyed. All that remains of this part are the two side walls, with their imposing windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here we enter directly onto the first floor, where we find what appears to have been a room with a stone fireplace. To one side of it is a beautiful, rounded balcony. This is where the water springs used to be, now blocked off for safety reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The exit to the outside leads onto a large balcony, where there used to be another staircase. Now it leads down only to ruins. Following a dirt path, we return to the first floor, with its rounded balcony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:41px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We visited the spa after the fires of the summer of 2025, so the landscape had been badly affected. Although surrounded by the scars of a fire, the building remained imposing and resilient, showing no major signs of the fire\u2019s impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\"
